Welcome to City Autism! My name is Kara and I’m in autism teacher in the, you guessed it…city! I’m passionate about helping teachers, parents, advocates, and allies of children with autism access inclusive, research-based educational and behavioral strategies. Having taught and lived in Chicago and Boston, urban education has special place in my heart. But whether you live in a big city or a small town I hope to provide tools that will help your students reach their fullest potential.
My classroom utilizes ABA principles and structured teaching to teach academic, behavioral, functional, and social skills. I also love to incorporate thematic units and opportunities for multi-sensory learning into my instruction. I believe in positive, proactive, and data-driven behavioral supports. I also think that instruction should aim to increase and maximize student independence. Additionally, I advocate for clear, organized, and age-appropriate classroom spaces and materials. I’m also currently training to become a BCBA and I hope to share a little bit of that journey with you, as well!
When someone asks me what I do for fun, I get a funny look when I say, “Er…umm…create teaching materials.” But it really is my favorite thing to do with my free time! There’s nothing better than the feeling of fresh laminate! I truly love creating materials for my own classroom and I love it when something I create can be used in other classrooms around the world.
When I’m not teaching or creating, I love spending time with my amazing husband and our very cute (but very naughty!) kitty, Chai. (Don’t let her sweet face fool you…she’s trouble!) We’re also committed Christians and our faith informs everything we do. I love teaching in our church’s children’s ministry and have recently started created Christian education materials for kids with special needs.
I am also an avid supporter of all things coffee, brunch, and children’s books (seriously…I may have a problem). Whether you want to chat about teaching kids with autism, share teacher ideas, or geek out over the best home laminating machine, I’d love to connect! Just email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks so much for stopping by!
